Obama, Biden, Casey, Rendell and Wolf must know something

When President Barack Obama and Vice President Joe Biden endorsed Katie McGinty yesterday for the U.S. Senate, they joined the club.
Gov. Tom Wolf, U.S. Sen. Bob Casey and former Gov. Ed Rendell already endorsed her.
You have to figure they all know something Pennsylvania Democratic voters don’t, but I just can’t figure out exactly what it is.
So far, practically nothing says she can defeat former congressman Joe Sestak.
The only consistent polling, which is by Terry Madonna and his pollsters at Franklin & Marshall College, shows Ms. McGinty falling further behind since January. The latest F&M poll, conducted just as both began their television commercial campaigns, showed Mr. Sestak ahead 31 percent to 14 percent.
That’s still largely a name recognition lead, but Mr. Sestak has been at this race longer and some of his lead comes from his relentless retail campaigning.
I did a quick check today and found she’s outspent him pretty substantially on Philadelphia television, but really she has to do that because she was so far behind.
He’s keeping pace at local stations like WNEP, which gives you the biggest bang for your buck in the northeast because it’s got the largest audiences.
If he can match her TV spending down the stretch, he’ll probably win.
The best I can figure is the big guys don’t think Mr. Sestak can beat Republican Sen. Pat Toomey. Given Mr. Toomey’s huge financial advantage, you can certainly argue Mr. Sestak is a better bet because he will have to spend less money to get known than Ms. McGinty. Not to mention he’s more like an outsider in a year voters seem to loathe establishment types.
Anyway, in case you missed it, here’s what the president and vice president said about Ms. McGinty.
President Obama: “I am proud to endorse Katie McGinty to be Pennsylvania’s next United States Senator. Katie is a true champion for working families, with a proven record of taking on big challenges and delivering for people. She spent her entire career working to promote clean energy and combat climate change, and worked closely with my administration to implement the Affordable Care Act and expand Medicaid coverage to more than 500,000 Pennsylvanians. I know Katie will take that same tenacity and drive with her to the Senate to ensure affordable, available heath care, to protect Social Security and Medicare, and to uphold and enforce Wall Street reforms.”
Vice President Biden: “Pennsylvania is near and dear to my heart, and there is no one better to represent its working men and women in the Senate than Katie McGinty. As the ninth out of ten children, the daughter of a restaurant hostess and a police officer, she knows what it means to work hard, struggle to make ends meet, and build a better life, one day at a time. Katie’s voice is sorely needed in the Senate to advocate for equal pay for women, a raise in the minimum wage, college affordability, and a quality education for every child. I am thrilled to endorse Katie McGinty because she’ll be there for Pennsylvania’s middle class families, day in and day out.”
